A method of manufacturing a disposable absorbent article comprising: providing an absorbent core having superabsorbent material including superabsorbent polymer particles and a nonwoven substrate including a low-density layer and a high-density layer, wherein the superabsorbent polymer particles are covered or intermixed with microfibrillated cellulose and embedded into pores of the nonwoven substrate in the low-density layer; and slitting the absorbent core to provide a plurality of slits, with a greater number of slits per unit area defining a region of greater liquid intake of the absorbent core as compared to another region of the absorbent core having a fewer number of slits per unit area.
